Traditional Birchbark Bitings by Sally Milne
Sally Milne is a Cree who is originally from Stanley Mission Saskatchewan. She learned the ancient art of birch bark biting from her grandmother. Her grandmother specified that the birch bark bitings were to be made with a flower center and four identical designs around the center to balance the whole picture. Sally's designs are balanced this way. Sally's grandmother did not at that time tell her why the bitings were to made in this manner. But when Sally read the words of Black Elk, her grandmother's teaching became clear.

The words of Black Elk, "In the old days when we were strong and happy people all our power came to us from the sacred hoop of the nation and so long as the hoop was unbroken the people flourished. The flowering tree was the living center of the hoop and the circle of the four quarters nourished it. The East of the hoop gave peace and light, the South gave warmth, the West gave rain and the North with it's cold and mighty wind, gave strength and endurance"

Although each biting is an original piece of art, Sally has not veered from the format as set out by her grandmother.
